In the Dec. 13 issue of the Rutland Herald, the editorial was quoted from the Bangor Daily News in Maine. It discussed the frustration of Mainers, after the recent horrific mass shooting in Lewiston, that the Republicans continue to resist any bills that regulate the ownership of assault weapons.
The Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America reads, in its entirety: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
Our country has a well-armed military to cover land, sea and air; there is no need for a militia of private citizens to protect the nation.
The founders did not envision the invention and use of assault weapons -- especially by U.S. citizens upon innocent, unarmed, U.S. citizens.
I have two basic questions: 1) What are owners of assault weapons so afraid of that they think they need this kind of protection? And, 2) What are Republicans afraid of besides losing the backing of the NRA, weapons owners, and large manufacturers of assault weapons?
