BARRE — An arrest warrant has been issued for a White River Junction woman accused of leaving a large amount of fentanyl in a Montpelier home.
Makiah Curtis, 23, failed to appear for her arraignment Thursday in Washington County criminal court in Barre on a felony count of narcotics possession and a misdemeanor count of reckless endangerment. If convicted, Curtis faces a maximum sentence of six years in prison. Bail on the warrant was set at $1,000.
According to an affidavit from the Vermont Drug Task Force, a woman called police on Jan. 13 to report she had found a large amount of heroin in her apartment that belonged to her friend Curtis. The task force said the woman reported she had been letting Curtis stay at the home.
The woman told police her young son got into a box of Curtis’ belongings and found a purse inside with several baggies containing an off-white powder, according to court records. The task force said the woman took pictures of the baggies and sent them to a friend who told her they likely contained heroin.
Police then went to the home and seized the purse and its contents, according to court records.
The task force said the woman reported she has known Curtis to use heroin in the past and had become suspicious that Curtis was using again.
Police then located Curtis who said she was “remorseful” that the child had found her drugs, according to court records.
The task force said Curtis reported she had been using heroin for the past year. The task force said Curtis admitted to possessing four bundles of heroin.
Investigators found 38 bags of suspected heroin, according to court records. The task force said a field test of the substance in the bags revealed the drug was actually fentanyl.
The task force said Curtis was in possession of about 779 milligrams of fentanyl which equates to about 243 doses.
