Kids escape room

WATERBURY — Waterbury author Aaron Starmer and Bridgeside Books create a math-themed “escape room”-style scavenger hunt for little readers and detectives from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, at the bookstore.

The event is for kids ages 8 to 11; adult participation required. Tickets are $10 per family and include a signed copy of “Math Mysteries: The Triple Threat,” Starmer’s newest middle-grade novel.

New exhibition 

NORWICH — Montshire Museum of Science has opened a new exhibition designed for its youngest visitors with their adult caregivers, “Welcome Home: Celebrating Asian Childhood.” The Welcome Home exhibition was developed as part of the Freeman Foundation Asian Culture Exhibit Series and provides an age-appropriate, play-based introduction to Chinese, Japanese and Hmong cultures while encouraging school readiness skills in children ages 2 to 5. The Montshire Museum is one of four museums selected from across the U.S. to receive this exhibition. To make the exhibition more accessible to families, it is presented in both English and Spanish.

Winter market

NORTHFIELD — Northfield Farmers Market is now accepting vendor applications for its online winter farmers market. The market partners with Good Measure Pub & Brewery, which will continue to host product drop-off, order assembly, and customer pick-up at its 17 East St. location in Northfield. It seeks farmers, cheese makers, food producers, bakers, cooks, artists, crafters and other purveyors of Vermont-made products.

NFM’s virtual store will be open for orders Thursday through Monday beginning Nov. 9. Vendors prepare orders on Tuesday, then drop them off at Good Measure Pub & Brewery from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday for customer pick-up from 5 to 6 p.m. Contact NFM to discuss other order-delivery options.

Vendors can receive direct electronic payments each week. Technical support for setting up and operating your virtual farmstand is also provided. Vendor cost is $125 for 22 weeks; $112 with the Early Bird Discount, deadline Nov. 9; a month-to-month option for only $50/month is also available.

College president

COLCHESTER — Saint Michael’s College board of trustees announced Richard Plumb, Ph.D., will become the 18th president of the college. He will begin his new role in January 2024. He most recently served as president of Saint Mary’s College in California. Prior to that, Plumb served seven years as executive vice president and provost at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota and nine years as dean of the Seaver College of Science and Engineering at Loyola Marymount University. A first-generation college student, Plumb holds a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering from Syracuse University.

Artisans Hand

MONTPELIER — Artisans Hand Craft Gallery has been a member of the Montpelier business community for 45 years. In celebration, the gallery is offering 20% off all purchases Nov. 3-5. Artisans Hand exhibits the work of over 130 Vermont-based craftspeople in a variety of media. The gallery is at 89 Main St. at City Center in Montpelier and is open from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Garden clubs

The fall 2023 Federated Garden Clubs of Vermont meeting was held at Rutland Country Club. The Central District garden clubs of Randolph GC, Middlebury GC Mountain Gardeners in the Mad River Valley, Rutland GC, Springfield GC, Weathersfield Garden Club in Weathersfield, were hosts for the meeting. Guest speaker was local floral designer Michele Dauphinais.

The FGCV community service projects include raising funds for a Blue Star Memorial Marker; promoting Penny for Pines, a national project dedicated to sustaining national and urban forests to forested areas damaged by insects, fires or natural catastrophes; welcoming the new Weathersfield Garden Club; and flood recovery effort with Granite Center Garden Club in Barre for gardens and containers replacement of plants and flowers washed away. The Federated Garden Clubs of Vermont consists of 16 clubs with over 700 members.

Poachers

Vermont State Game Wardens are asking Vermonters with information about fish and wildlife crimes to submit them through the Operation Game Thief program. This is a joint nonprofit program sponsored by Vermont Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs and administered by Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department. It provides a way for people to help protect the state’s fish and wildlife by reporting law violators at 800-75ALERT (800-752-5378). The toll-free hotline is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year to report violations. Rewards are paid for information leading to arrests.
