Alas, and unfortunately predictably, the Israeli government under Benjamin Netanyahu has stooped to the level of Hamas.
The ground assault on the cities in the Gaza Strip may count a legitimate self-defense; it is targeted at the militants who perpetrated the horrors of Oct. 7.
The bombardment of Gaza, resulting in over 15,000 casualties (two-thirds of them women and children) is simply terrorism by more efficient means. The Israeli government has not spared hospitals — this is yet another war crime. They are refusing to allow the entry of relief supplies, having also caused a massive displacement of the people of Gaza.
The apparent goal is a form of ethnic cleansing of Gaza and beyond. The Kahanist elements of the Israeli government were already advocating such a strategy in the West Bank, long before Oct. 7. It is a bitter thought that the people who suffered the Shoah now tolerates a government that wishes to extirpate the people of Palestine — never a nation, as a specious argument goes, but for thousands of years, the people who lived in that territory ruled by larger empires.
