It didn't take long for Murphy to make a splash both inside and outside as the defending Division II champions kicked off their title defense with a pair of victories. The Solons headed to the St. Johnsbury Field House for their season opener and secured a 4-3 victor over the D-I Hilltoppers, thanks to several gritty efforts on a playing surface that was new to MHS. Murphy and teammate Emily Swenson both netted three-set victories, with Murphy charging the net late to close out a 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 win over Mary Fowler. Two days later the No. 2 singles standout overcame a determined effort by Spaulding's Julia Fewer, prevailing 6-0, 6-4 while leading the Solons to a 7-0 victory. Last spring Murphy played a huge role in guiding her team to its eighth title in program history with a 4-3 semifinal victory at Burr & Burton and a 4-3 championship victory at Middlebury. She breezed past Bulldogs standout Mac Theurmer, 6-0, 6-0, in the semis before coasting to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Tigers opponent Abby Bailey. The Solons' singles lineup this spring also features Daphne Lassner, Rachana Cherian, Sophie Sevi and Kenzie Golonka. Montpelier will host North Country on April 26.
