HYDE PARK — Lamoille used a slight size advantage, an intense full-court press and a 16-point performance by Evie Pirie to overwhelm U-32, 43-24, during Tuesday’s girls basketball action.

Alyssa Small and Maddex Percy scored six points apiece for the Lancers, who outscored U-32 16-2 in the third quarter. Natalie Beauregard (eight points), Clara Wilson (six points) and Paige Parker (six points) paced the Raiders.

Lamoille’s Alana Crittendon assisted Emma LaRock on the opening possession, Pirie made two foul shots, LaRock set up for Marielle Benoit and then Pirie drained a jumper for an 8-0 lead. Beauregard answered with back-to-back buckets to give the Raiders a spark entering the final two minutes of the first quarter U-32’s Rheia Schall countered another Lancers basket with two points of her own, closing the gap to 10-6 after eight minutes of play.

Pirie extended the lead to 14-6 in the first minute of the second quarter and Elise Small added a foul shot as the Lancers stayed in total control. Schall capped a three-point play from the foul line and teammate Lydia Trombley hit a free throw midway through the quarter. Two steals and two layups by Pirie kept the Lancers flying high before Beauregard responded with two points for U-32. Another shot by Pirie fell through the netting on the last possession of the quarter, giving Lamoille a 21-12 halftime lead.

The recurring theme of fast-break layups by Pirie continued early the third quarter to give the Lancers a double-digit lead. Wilson scored her first basket of the contest 30 seconds later, but LaRock answered almost immediately with a jumper. Crittendon splashed in a 3-pointer and Ava Clark stretched the lead to 30-14 before U-32 called a timeout. Small and Clark both scored after the short break, resulting in another timeout by the shellshocked Raiders. An old-fashioned three-point play by Dana Callahan made it 37-14 at the end of the quarter.

Percy scored four quick points for Lamoille early in the final quarter. A putback and foul shot by Wilson combined with a Parker 3-pointer helped U-32 keep the score respectable. Percy scored again heading into the final two minutes and then two foul shots by Parker and one by Wilson at the end of the game led to the final outcome.

U-32 (1-4) will host North Country at 7 p.m. Thursday. Lamoille (2-2) will travel to play Lake Region the same day.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

North Country 45, Spaulding 20

NEWPORT — Tuesday’s rematch of last year’s Division II championship was closely contested until the Falcons erupted for an 18-2 third-quarter run to open the floodgates against the Crimson Tide.

“It was a tale of two halves,” Spaulding coach Tanya MacAuley said. “We kept up with them for the first half. We played great defense and moved the ball well in transition. The second half, we struggled . Our defense fell apart and we allowed them to get second and third offensive rebounds. We had many shots that went in and out of the net, but we struggled to have an offensive presence in the second half.”

Sabine Brueck (18 points) and Aliyah Wilburn (10 points) paced North Country. Spaulding’s top scorers were Sophie Guarriello (seven points) and Gracie Martin (six points). North Country was in front 8-7 after the first quarter and led 18-14 heading into halftime.

Spaulding (3-3) will host Harwood at 7 p.m. Thursday. North Country (4-1) will travel to play U-32 the same evening.

“Tonight wasn’t our best full game, but we will start piecing it all together,” MacAuley said. “We are young and learning to play together. We will get there, one step at a time.”

Montpelier 47, Woodstock 29

WOODSTOCK — The trio of Ireland Donahue (19 points), Willow Sterling-Proulx (10 points) and Regan Walke (eight points) combined to outscore the entire Wasps team during Tuesday’s comfy victory to kick off the New Year.

Khloi Bruso (12 points) and Georgia Tarleton (10 points) paced Woodstock, which trailed 16-6 after the first quarter. The Solons led 27-17 after two quarters and were in front 41-26 heading into the final quarter.

“We came out a little slow,” MHS coach Haidi Arias said. “But once we started pressuring the ball, we got some steals and we were able to convert in transition. I thought we moved the ball well and our guards did a great job and put up some key points. We have to do a little better job rebounding, and not letting teams get second chances. But overall, our players did a great job and came out with a win.”

Montpelier (3-3) will host Thetford at 7 p.m. Thursday. Woodstock (2-5) will host Windsor at 7 p.m. Friday.

Hazen 58, Enosburg 47

Lilly Robtoy scored 22 points for the Hornets, who faced a 16-9 deficit after the first quarter. Hazen led 27-21 entering halftime and was in front 46-32 at the end of the third quarter.

“Enosburg is one of those teams that will never let you outwork them,” Hazen coach Randy Lumsden said. “It was a tough road win.”

Hazen (4-1) will host Stowe at 7 p.m. Thursday. Enosburg (3-3) will travel to play Colchester on Jan. 10.
