Library events

BARRE — The Friends of the Aldrich Library will hold its Light Up the Library grand opening from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1. This year’s theme is “Merry Barre Holidays.” Light refreshments will be served, and community members are encouraged to bring a homemade or purchased ornament to add to the Friends’ community tree. For two weeks beginning Dec. 1, the Library will be decorated with donated trees, wreaths and other items, complementing decorations provided by Granite Center Garden Club each year. Donated decorations, including the community tree, will be raffled off, with winners to be announced Dec. 15. All proceeds from Light up the Library will go directly to support library programs and materials for all ages.

On Dec. 1, 2 and 3, the library will host a family-friendly play of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol at Barre Congregational Church. The performances are at 7 p.m. Dec. 1 and 2, and the matinee is at 2 p.m. Dec. 3. Tickets are free but limited and can be obtained by visiting the library or calling 802-475-7550.

Submissions wanted for children’s art show can be three framed pieces per child by Dec. 1; library will frame it for you. The show will be up from Dec. 10, 2023, through March 1, 2024.

Wreathmaking with Sarah Graves from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2; pre-register by Friday, Dec. 1. For ages 10 and older, younger children need to be supervised by an adult. Bring something to add to your wreath, wear clothes that can get a little dirty; tools, greens and decorations are provided.

Common Spirit

NORTHFIELD — Northfield Farmers Market invites the public to this year’s Common Spirit Holiday Market from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, on the town Common at Depot Square. Modeled on traditional European outdoor winter markets, Common Spirit celebrates community and the many ways the season is observed. Common Spirit is held along with a number of other events around town, including holiday tree illumination, Santa’s grand arrival, cookies with Santa at the American Legion.

The cost for a vendor space is free for full-season vendors already selling through NFM, and $15 for everyone else. To reserve your space or for more information, email northfieldfarmersmarketvt@gmail.com or call 802-485-8586.

This year, the market partners with The Veterans’ Place, which is holding a fundraising raffle for a Farm-to-Table Double-Date Dinner for Four featuring locally grown ingredients donated by the market’s vendors. The winner and three guests will be treated to a four-course meal prepared by The Veterans’ Place staff and volunteers, and two gift baskets. This special Valentine’s evening will be hosted by the Margaret Holland Inn. Raffle tickets cost $5 and will be sold at the Common Spirit Celebration. Tickets will also be available at The Veterans’ Place 802-485-8874, and can be purchased through the NFM’s online market starting Dec. 2 at northfieldfm.eatfromfarms.com. The drawing will be held Feb. 1.
