Alley project

WATERBURY — Groundbreaking for Stowe Street Alley’s renovation project is now scheduled for April 2024. This supports the Stowe Street Alley Steering Committee’s decision to postpone the first phase demolition and asphalt removal following an in-depth assessment of the project’s timeline regarding renovation schedules and design revisions. The committee gives assurance that project planning continues.

The project is a community-driven initiative focused on turning the blighted alleyway located between 21 and 23 Stowe St. into a welcoming community space for events, exhibits and gatherings. Planning and targeted fundraising initiatives will continue throughout the fall and winter, assuring the completion of designs and municipal approvals by spring 2024.

Flood relief

Applications are now open for a Marshall and Margherite McComb Flood Relief Fellowship at Vermont Studio Center. The fellowships will be awarded to two visual artists and one writer from Vermont who were impacted by 2023 flooding. Each fellowship will cover the cost of a four-week residency, which runs from Nov. 26 to Dec. 21. To be eligible, applicants must:

— Be a Vermont resident for at least one year prior to the application deadline.

— Be a visual artist or writer.

— Have been demonstrably impacted by the floods of 2023.

Applications will close at midnight Sunday, Nov. 5. Visit vermontstudiocenter.org/mccomb-foundation-flood-relief-fellowships to apply.

The Vermont Studio Center’s Fund for Displaced Artists & Writers was conceived in 2007, when VSC Trustee Marina Day wanted to support California artists whose lives and studio practices had been disrupted by wildfires. VSC seeks funds on an ongoing basis to support the fellowships for displaced artists and writers. While it is not possible to help all artists and writers who may be in need, the fund aspires to bring relief and hope to a growing number of artists and writers each year.
