The calls for a unilateral Israeli ceasefire in Gaza not only fail to see the cause of this conflict, but they also fail to recognize the agency of the people of Gaza.
Since the war started, western observers have treated the Gazans like children who have no role to play and only made their pleas for peace to the people of Israel. They hold Israeli citizens responsible for the actions of their leaders and military but fail to hold the Gazans responsible for their leaders and military.
While Hamas is not the picture of democracy, they have much higher support than Biden or Trump ever had here. A wholesale rejection of their rule by Gazans and a demand that the hostages be released would not be able to be ignored by their leaders.
Israel will not stop the operation until they destroy Hamas and their military infrastructure. The only way for that to happen sooner is if the Gazans surrender their hostages and their military leadership. Gaza started a war on the false belief that Israeli public opinion would prevent the IDF from actually striking back in a meaningful way.
The Israeli campaign is brutal and disturbing, but it's also the natural response of a country that simply wishes to prevent another Oct. 7 and the return of their citizens.
