Earth shattered global annual heat records last year and it's flirting with the warming threshold that nations wanted to stay within to avoid the worst consequences of climate change. That's according to Copernicus, the European climate agency, which reported Tuesday that 2023 was 1.48 degrees Celsius (2.66 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial times. That's just a whisker below the 1.5-degree threshold nations agreed to try to stay within at the Paris climate talks in 2015. And Copernicus said this January is on track to be so warm that the world will go past that 1.5-degree threshold for the first time over a 12-month period. Climate scientists say it's imperative that humans continue trying to hold down warming.

Days after Mexico’s Supreme Court lifted a suspension on bullfights in the world’s largest bullring, a young bullfighter practiced his steps and waved his cape in front of a bull’s head mounted on a wheeled cart. The court’s decision raised the hopes of thousands of fans, but also those who depend on the spectacle for their livelihoods. Mexico City’s Plaza Mexico is considered the cathedral of Mexican bullfighting and is one of the world's three main bullrings along with Las Ventas in Madrid and La Maestranza in the Spain's city of Seville. The expected return of the controversial sport is agitating animal rights activists who say bullfighting is a form of animal cruelty.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is holding talks in Israel as he seeks a plan for Gaza’s post-war future. Israeli troops, meanwhile, pushed ahead Tuesday in the beleaguered territory where heavy bombardment and fighting shook refugee camps and hampered efforts to get relief to the population. The U.N. says Israel has repeatedly rejected planned convoys of medicine and other supplies to northern Gaza. Those killed in latest strikes included seven members of the family of a well-known dentist in Gaza. Nine Israeli soldiers also died. Blinken is also trying to prevent an all-out war between Israel and Lebanon’s militant group Hezbollah.

The Plaza de Toros Mexico bullring is empty as a bullfighter trains in Mexico City, Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2023. The spectacle took a critical blow in 2022 when a judge banned bullfighting in Mexico City, but now that the country's Supreme Court of Justice has overturned the ban, the controversial sport is set to return to the capital, home to what is billed as the world's largest bullfighting ring. An Israeli airstrike has killed an elite Hezbollah commander in southern Lebanon. It's the latest in an escalating exchange of strikes along the border that have raised fears of another Mideast war even as the fighting in Gaza exacts a mounting toll on civilians. A Lebanese security official said Monday's strike on an SUV killed a commander in a secretive Hezbollah force that operates along the border. Hezbollah identified the slain fighter as Wissam al-Tawil without providing further details. He is the most senior Hezbollah militant to have been killed since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack into southern Israel triggered all-out war in Gaza and lower-intensity fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, which has escalated since an Israeli strike killed a senior Hamas leader in Beirut last week.

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco has appeared in a Dominican court to face allegations that he had a brief relationship with a 14-year-old girl and gave her mother a small car and thousands of dollars in exchange for her consent, according to court documents obtained by The Associated Press. The 22-year-old All-Star is accused of commercial sexual exploitation and money laundering. A judge who is scheduled to issue a ruling in the case on Friday has several options, including releasing Franco on bond and preventing him from leaving the Dominican Republic. The girl’s mother faces the same charges as Franco.
