Willard R. McManis MONTPELIER — Willard (Willie) Robert McManis, also known as “Mac” to some of his friends and family, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at the Baptist Health Hardin in Elizabethtown, KY, just shy of his 85th birthday. He was born on December 11, 1938 in Montpelier, VT to Willard and Beatrice (Cooke) McManis. His life was characterized by his unwavering courage, selflessness, and passionate dedication to his family and country. His commitment to service was evident when he joined the United States Navy, where he served from February 1956 to December 1975 attaining the rank of Chief Quartermaster (ship’s navigator). While in the Navy, he was awarded medals for Armed Forces Expeditionary, Good Conduct (2), National Defense (2), Vietnam service (2), Vietnam Campaign (2) and Vietnam Service w/Bronze star. He was also awarded 2 Combat Action Ribbons. But he was most proud of his medal of valor, when he was awarded the Purple Heart in 1968 for being severely wounded when the Patrol Boat, Riverine (gun boat) he commanded on the rivers of Vietnam came under enemy fire. After retiring from the Navy he lived in Vermont, Texas, Tennessee and finally Kentucky. As a member of the VFW post 792 and American Legion Post 3 in Montpelier, he found camaraderie and purpose in supporting veterans and their families and contributing to the community. He was married twice to women who were important in his life, Carol Jean Snyder and Jacqueline Derman, both now deceased. He was also preceded in death by his two daughters, Carol Ann Satterfield and Cindy McManis, his parents and three of his siblings, Janet Lane, Michael McManis, and David McManis. He is survived by his grandchildren, Crystal Jean McManis, Chris Brown and his wife Tonya, and Brittany Brown and her partner Clayton Babb; six great grandchildren; his siblings, Patricia Huckins, Roger McManis and Rosalie McManis and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
