Aaron M. Reed BARRE — Aaron Matthew Reed, 31, of Barre City left this life in the early morning hours of December 14, 2023, at the University of Vermont Medical Center following a firearms accident on December 11th. Aaron was born December 22, 1991, in Rutland. At birth he immediately stood out with his raspberry birth mark on part of his upper chest and arm making him easily distinguishable in the hospital nursery. It was often a point of concerned inquiry with unfamiliar healthcare providers over the course of his life. He attended Christ the King School in Rutland, then Barre City Elementary School, and lastly Spaulding High School where he graduated in 2010. He was active in BYSA football, soccer, baseball, basketball, and wrestling. He also participated in cub scouts. In his teen years, he found interest in the technical center programs including automotive and construction trades. Following high school, Aaron continued his interest in hands-on work, taking jobs at Sugarbush in his down time from regular jobs as a roofer, Global Values for several years as a monument stone sandblaster, Calmont Beverage Co., and most recently Village Homes, Inc. all in Central Vermont. Aaron was an avid sportsman enjoying snowboarding, riding snow mobiles, fishing and hunting through the fall and winter. Aaron was always restoring or improving trucks or cars, helping tow people who were stuck in ditches, clearing snow mobile trails, or helping with building projects or roofing repairs. Aaron always had a giving spirit to those who needed a hand, he possessed the gift of gab, and a capacity for making lasting friendships with ease. Aaron is survived by parents Frank and Cheryl Reed of Barre; sister Amy and her husband, Rob Melna of Randolph; sister Alison Reed of Barre; and brother Adam Reed and partner Kate Roach of Northfield. Aaron is also survived by his three nephews, Tyler Terrien of Rutland, Brett Terrien of Randolph and Sage Slopnick of Barre and one niece Skylar Slopnick of Barre. Aaron is also survived by his near constant companion in life, his golden lab Marley or “Miss Mo” who many more affectionately knew as just “Piggy”. Immediately following Aaron’s tragic accident and the life-ending injuries sustained, he was recognized as an ideal candidate for possible organ and tissue donation. Consistent with his giving spirit in life and the opportunity to create some good out of a senseless tragedy, the decision was made to honor him with his donation to others in need. It is with great comfort that his family understands that through his donation, five other individuals have now been given the opportunity to live and have additional time with their families during this holiday season. Given Aaron’s benefits from Barre youth programs, persons wishing to make contributions may consider donations in his memory to the Barre Youth Sports Association or other organizations focused on youth development and community engagement activities. Formal services will be deferred given the holiday season, so that all who knew him can enjoy time spent with family and friends. His family would invite those who knew Aaron to light a candle of remembrance on Friday, December 22nd which will be his first heavenly birthday since leaving this life. For those who do an activity or remembrance, please consider sharing a post to his Facebook page with the many friends who have shared pictures, jokes, and memories there so far. A graveside service and additional time to remember Aaron will be planned at the convenience of the family in Spring of 2024. Arrangements are by Hooker Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre. For a memorial guestbook, please visit www.hookerwhitcomb.com
